crying and spying

My brother was not a fan of reading or books in general. We differed in many ways, but we both loved to sit on his bed and have my mother read Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends. The silly rhymes and images they conjured up delighted us to no end. And his personal favorite, “For Sale”, always made me so angry. Now, it just fills my heart with warm laughter.  Happy Birthday Chris.

For Sale

One sister for sale!
One sister for sale!
One crying and spying young sister for sale!
I’m really not kidding,
So who’ll start the bidding?
Do I hear a dollar?
A nickel?
A penny?
Oh, isn’t there, isn’t there, isn’t there any
One kid that will buy this old sister for sale,
This crying and spying young sister for sale.
